Be Honest. How would you feel,

 If lawmakers wanted to use your tax dollars to support private Muslim schools to teach children Islamic beliefs?

 If police cars and courthouses had the words "Allah be Praised" on them?

If you son or daughter was forced to recite Islamic prayers to be on a school sports team?

If presidential candidates said that the U S Constitution might be ignored in favor of Islamic teachings? Appalling thought isn't it? 

 The thing is, atheists are living with this every day, not with Islam, but with Christianity.

Regarding Christians Who Gloat About People Burning in Hell.

 I want to talk about Hell today. 

 There is something truly grotesque about the way so many Christians seem to get off on the idea of people burning in Hell. I’m sure you’ve seen what I have: the way their eyes glitter when they talk about it, the eager tone of voice they get when describing in lurid detail the horrors non-believers will experience there. I don’t think they even realize they’re coming off that way, they’re so desensitized to the idea by now. The idea that a huge number of their family members, loved ones, and total strangers alike are one day going to burn forever and ever and ever is so endemic to their worldview that I’m not sure they even realize what it means or what their gloating implies about them as people. Today we’re going to talk about this mindset and what it means–and why good people reject it.

A Chaplain and an Atheist Go to War

SANGIN, Afghanistan—They say there are no atheists in foxholes. There's one on the front lines here, though, and the chaplain isn't thrilled about it.

Navy Chaplain Terry Moran is steeped in the Bible and believes all of it. His assistant, Religious Programs Specialist 2nd Class Philip Chute, is steeped in the Bible and having none of it.

Together they roam this town in Taliban country, comforting the grunts while crossing swords with each other over everything from the power of angels to the wisdom of standing in clear view of enemy snipers. Lt. Moran, 48 years old, preaches about divine protection while 25-year-old RP2 Chute covers the chaplain's back and wishes he were more attentive to the dangers of the here and now.

It's a match made in, well, the Pentagon.

 "He trusts God to keep him safe," says RP2 Chute. "And I'm here just in case that doesn't work out."

The 460 Army, Navy and Air Force chaplains deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan are prohibited from carrying weapons, counting on their assistants and the troops around them for protection. It can be a perilous calling. On Monday, Chaplain Dale Goetz, 43, of White, S.D., and four other soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb near Kandahar. Capt. Goetz is the first Army chaplain killed in action since the Vietnam War.

Atheist Invocation to the Chico City Council

Delivered by George Gold, Coordinator of the Butte County Coalition of Reason, to the Chico (Ca.) City Council meeting of Tuesday, January 6, 2015; 06:30 pm.

Good evening Mr. Mayor,  members of the city council.

I’m George Gold, Coordinator of the Butte County Coalition of Reason, and I’m President of the Atheists of Butte County.

Rather than bowing our heads and closing our eyes in deference, we want to encourage you to open your eyes wide to face the reality that confronts us. We should do so without losing sight of our ideals and what we might achieve.

When this body comes together to govern, you do so with the consent of the citizens of Chico. Chico is a diverse community with many different views and opinions. This eclectic community, according to the Pew Research Center includes 20 per cent of our population living secular lives.

In the city of Chico that means for the first time ever, I’m here representing over 17,000 secular Chico citizens with this invocation.

Humanists, non-believers, agnostics and atheists by their very nature, believe that we have the power to solve all problems within ourselves, amongst ourselves, through science and reason and that by applying this science and reason with the strength found in sympathy and compassion we can overcome any hurdle we encounter.

It is incumbent upon this council to make the best decisions for the entire community. In this regard, I ask that you use wisdom, common sense, and empathy in your deliberations.
